NetWare 6.5 Service Pack 2 overlay cd installation fails to mount CD-ROM as a volume.

When installing NetWare 6.5 by using the Service Pack 2 overlay cd-rom (available here, TID 2969163) the CD-ROM won't mount as a NetWare Volume during the installation. (Tested in VMware Workstation 4.5.2)

I found that it will work however if you use the IDECD driver from NetWare 6.5 service pack 1. (Dated March 15, 2003)

You can extract the IDECD.CDM and IDECD.DDI from service pack 1 but i have placed them on my website too: idecdnw65sp1.zip

Add these files into the overlay ISO in the \DRIVERS\STORAGE directory.

Possible solution 2: (with thanks to Cas Gielissen, AAC Cosmos NL)

  1. Create the Netware 6.5 VM and remove USB and sound (you won't need them anyhow).
  2. In the settings of the VM's CD-ROM enable the checkbox for 'Legacy Emulation'.
  3. Start the VM and press F2 immediately.
  4. Go to the Boot menu and put the CD-ROM at the top of the boot order list.
  5. Save the settings and restart the Virtual Machine.
  6. Start the Netware 6.5 installation.
  7. The installation files are being copied and the device drivers are being loaded. On screen the mesage appears that the volume NW65OS cannot be loaded. At this point go to the settings of your VM and disable the checkbox for 'Legacy Emulation'. Save the settings. The volume will now be mounted and the installation continues.
  8. After the installtion enable and disable 'Legacy Emulation' once. This will enable you to mount cd-rom's in your server.
